James Burns
Dr. James Burns possesses extensive experience in the field of academic administration. Since 2010, he has provided his services as the director of California State University Maritime Academy. In this position, he fuses together his expertise and skills honed at various organizations and in various positions. Since 2004, he has served as the dean of the graduate school at the institution. Dr. Burns has gained experience in the past as the director of the Federal Research Center for the University of California, Berkeley, the director of the graduate school of California University and as the director of Graduate Studies at MidAmerica Nazarene University.

Dr. Burns prepared for a career in this field by earning a master’s degree and doctorate from Northern Arizona University in 1985 and 1990, respectively. Dr. Burns has been just as active in the educational system on a civil level in addition to his work. In the past, he has served on the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee and the Policy and Procedures Committee for the Kansas State Board of Education. Furthermore, he has been on the Executive Committee for the Kansas Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. In 1996, he moderated the candidate debates at the Olathe Unified School Board. He has also taught with the Education Reform Task Force with the US Department of Education, the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

On a professional level, Dr. Burns has maintained affiliation with a variety of organizations that have aided in his development. He has been involved with program development grants with the Council of Graduate Schools, a secretary, treasurer and life member of Phi Kappa Phi and a member of the Western Association of Graduate Schools. In 2015, he set up satellite camps in California. He has also been a grantee, receiving a development grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, a program planning and implementation grant from the Ford Foundation and an international program development grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. He was named Alumnus of the Year from MidAmerica Nazarene University in 1996. He has been featured in the 60th, 61st, 62nd, 64th and 66th editions of Who's Who in America.
